I am an artist working with semi-precious stones; metals; beads of glass, metal and mineral; and textiles. I mix these materials to create wearable, sculptural, and decorative art. I work consciously with and “listen to” my media to create pieces that support the materials and enhance their energy. Each resulting piece is unique, with no combination of materials or twist of wire the same. Buyers of my work describe it as “warm and wonderful,” “powerful and grounding,” “bringing clarity and peace,” and “so perfect I want to always have it with me!” Above all, my purpose in creating is to bring joy--to myself, to my materials, and to those experiencing my work. I consider myself a global citizen, and I am keenly awaware of my potential impact on this planet, both positive and negative. A portion of my profits goes to supporting global justice initiatives (human rights, environmental impact, economic justice, etc.), primarily through the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (www.UUSC.org). In addition, I make every effort to work with sustainably-produced materials. I select stones that are as close to their natural state as possible (no chemical or heat treatment; no man-made stones). The glass beads I use are crafted in the Czech Republic or Japan, where working conditions are superior to those in other countries. My primary supplier of raw materials pays a living wage, provides benefits to all employees, and has a vast recycling program (even encouraging employees to bring recyclables of all kinds from home for conscious disposal). Finally, I seek out paper and packaging materials with high post-consumer content. With each decision, I carefully consider if the item has been created in a balanced, thoughtful, just, and gentle way. |
